Bio
Born in 1976 in Niterói, Brazil, Rafael Vicente currently lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he has a studio situated in a former Bhering factory. Joined the painting course at the Escola de Belas Artes of the Federal University of the Rio de Janeiro State, concluded in 2005. In the following year, was selected for a scholarship at the restoration and conservation center of the same institution. Vicente also took lessons with Iole de Freitas at Parque Lage and attended to the theoretical course of Agnaldo Farias, Fabiana de Moraes and Suzi Coralli. It also gives lessons as a substitute teacher of painting theory at Federal University of the Rio de Janeiro State. From 1999, the artist started to explore different techniques and to use diverse materials in their works, such as Carnaúba and asphalt.
Statement
Rafael Vicente uses a technique called “All Over”, a clear reference to the works of the 20th century, where whole is not present in the work, as it is brought to infinite. He works with urban landscapes, makes his works an expression of an industrial city. Their perceptions of the environment, such as lighting and texture are transported to his works in the creating a channel belonging to the scenario between shipyards and buildings civilians. According to him, “art is the whole”, materials like oils, asphalt and wood are incorporated into your job. Rafael does not intend to just paint landscapes, it mixes with nature and makes us embark on an urban imaginary.
